Hand with bent finger

bentfinger_webIt took nearly 20 years of playing Ultimate for me to get my first feature-altering injury. I’ve had many sprained ankles, sore shoulders, split lips and bruised egos, but this one is new. The tip of right hand middle finger has gone all floppy. It doesn’t really hurt, but it feels …wierd. When I pick up a glass my brain thinks that the glass is warped, when it’s actually that my brain is unfamiliar with the new angle of my finger. Strange. My friend Lucas, who is a doctor, said that it might be a strained ligament and that it might heal and resume normal shape after a while…or maybe not. In the meantime, I will be limited in my ability to say “fuck you” with my right hand. Fortunately, I’m a lefty.

    Hi Gid,
I did what seems like the same thing to my left index finger 10 years ago while playing catch without a mitt. It never straightened out. I’m now a very scary-looking knitter.
Love your drawing. Almost as much as I love your fish tacos.

    Hi Gideon,
One treat I always enjoy at work is checking out your blog!
Morgan got the same or similar finger injury catching a football a couple years ago. Mallet finger, drop or hammer finger – when the extensor tendon is partially or totally torn from the distal phalanx (bone at end of finger). So the finger cannot fully extend. Hope it heals. (Morgan’s tendon pulled the bone apart so he had surgery.)
Hey, good luck on that sleep training idea. I guess most people do something like that. We never got into it – at around 3 or 4 each of the kids finally left the family bed.
