Cauliflower Stem

March 3rd, 2009

cauliflower

This is the stem of one of those purple cauliflowers, which happen to be delicious. I parboiled it in salted water and then tossed it with a little lemon olive oil and lemon juice. Although it lost a bit of it’s bright purple-ness in the parboiling, when i sprinkled on the lemon juice, parts of it turned an almost florescent magenta. Wild. Made me wonder…if I put lemon juice in the water, will the whole thing turn that color? I’ll have to buy another one and try it.

Milo’s First Drawing!

February 25th, 2009

MilosFirstDrawing_sm

I was making some fumbling and uninspired sketches of Milo this morning when he grabbed my pencil and made his very first drawing. His contribution is on the far right:

Milo Chewing on a Metal Bowl

February 11th, 2009

Milo_tinplate_smI know he looks kind of maniacal here…but when he gets to chomping, he does so with ferocity and determination. I have no recollection of it, but if Milo’s drooling, chomping and night wakings are any indication then teething is a bitch.

Milo, 6 Months Old!

January 21st, 2009

Milo6mo_web

Milo is 6 months old today! I am astounded that the three of us have made it this far. It’s a beautiful bright winter morning. I’m having a yummy espresso, Julie is sleeping, and Milo is playing with his jingly block courtesy of grandpa Frank. I have enough work to pay the bills for a couple months. Oh, and Obama is our president. Things are pretty good.

Waste of Time V: This Landfill is Your Landfill, This Landfill is My Landfill, Pt. 2

October 27th, 2008

Waste_5sm

Here is my garbage from the past weekend, swaddled in another patriotic plastic bag (made proudly in the USA!, sez the bag). Thanks to James Pertusi for the title!

More Waste of Time

October 17th, 2008

Waste_2_smIt’s been a rough week…I’m wussing out on the everyday posting. Been busy taking care of the little boy while Julie busts her ass to finish work for the Chicago art fair. Also working on a comic strip with my friend Steven, I hope to post some of those here soon. Here is a drawing of  this morning’s contribution to America’s landfill:

There’s something wonderful about American flags printed on plastic bags. It wraps whatever’s inside in the warm glow of patriotism. In this case it’s mostly packaging from boneless chicken thighs, some bacon grease,  and an old can of dried up gesso.  Actually, what it really makes me think of is a great Randy Newman song.
