I had intended to sketch out a variety of goblins for a chapter book I’m currently illustrating, but my mind began to wander…then it squirted out of my head.
It’s a no frills valentines day this year. Little money and even less time. I did these drawings for Julie on a crowded F train coming home on Friday.
You will never see more tired-looking people than during evening rides home on the subway. Maybe I’m projecting but since the recent economic troubles started people on their evening commute look even more beleaguered and beaten down than before.
Got a seat on the Q this morning, plopped my bag down on the floor between my legs and set out to write out some brilliant ideas that would lead to great works of children’s literature…but my mind was blank and all I could think to do was draw what was right in front of me.

For the next few weeks there will likely be a lot of entries like this. I’m working in Manhattan for the first time since Milo was born so commuting time will be my best chance to draw (I’ll be drawing at work, but not anything fun or that I would want to lay claim to). After four months of a mostly cocoon-like experience at home with Julie and Milo, it was a shock this morning to pile onto the subway and then to emerge into the bustle of midtown. I’ll be spending my mornings with Milo, but won’t get home until he’s gone to bed. I’ll miss our midday walks.
